How to Paint Wood Shutters: A Step-by-Step Guide

Nothing elevates a home's look quite like freshly painted wood shutters. Here's how to get a smooth, long-lasting finish, inside or out.

Tools and materials

  • Screwdriver (to remove the shutters)
  • Mild detergent, sponge and water
  • Fine-grit sandpaper (around 120 to 220 grit) and a sanding sponge
  • Wood filler and painter's tape
  • A quality primer and paint suited to indoor or outdoor use
  • A small angled brush; a paint sprayer is optional but speeds up louvers
  • Drop cloths and sawhorses

1. Remove and label

Take the shutters down and label each one so it goes back in the same spot. Painting them flat on sawhorses gives a far better finish than painting in place.

2. Clean thoroughly

Wash off dust and grime with mild soapy water, rinse and let them dry completely. Paint won't stick well to a dirty surface.

3. Repair and sand

Fill dents and cracks with wood filler. Once dry, lightly sand all surfaces to remove gloss and loose paint, then wipe away the dust.

4. Prime

Apply a thin coat of primer, especially on bare wood or if you're making a big color change. Let it dry as directed.

5. Paint the louvers first

Open the louvers and paint their edges and faces with thin coats, working from the top. Then close them the other way and catch any spots you missed. Finish with the frame and stiles.

6. Second coat and cure

A second thin coat gives an even, durable finish. Let the paint cure fully before re-hanging, ideally overnight, so the louvers don't stick.
